BREAKING: New #coronavirus death figures reveal 962 people have died in Scotland between 16 March + 12 April. But how do these compare to the daily figures, how many died in care homes, and what's the age/gender breakdown? I did a deep dive into the data for @BBCScotlandNews...
First off, there's a 52% difference between the deaths recorded by @NatRecordsScot (962) and @scotgov (566) during this period. Why is this?
Well, the new weekly stats from @NatRecordsScot include ALL deaths inside/outside hospitals including care homes, + even where #COVID19 was deemed to have played a part in a death. Govt figures record ppl who've died in hospital within 28 days of testing positive for the virus.
Here's how the trajectories of the two data sets compare. The good news is - regardless of the source - the curve *appears* to be levelling out somewhat...
...however, we must bear in mind that NRS data is reliant on when people register a death. In Scotland you legally have 8 days to do so. This means - depending on how quickly this is done - we could still see significant numbers of delayed registrations being made in coming week
...and there did also seem to be another dip in weekend registrations. This could be coincidental, due to reduced weekend hours, or fact that ppl didn't know they could register a death at the weekend.
Community breakdown - this is the first week we've been given a location-based breakdown. While it's still not as granular as I would like, we can deduce that...
...25% of ALL #coronavirus deaths registered to date have taken place in care homes. Put another way, we can see that #COVID19 was related to 15% of ANY death recorded in a Scottish care home over this 4-week period.
...62% of ALL #coronavirus deaths registered to date have taken place in hospitals. Put another way, we can see that #COVID19 was related to 24% of ANY death recorded in a Scottish hospital over this 4-week period.
...and - this is the one that raises ??? for me - 13% of ALL #coronavirus deaths registered to date have taken place in homes. No beds? Scared to go to hospital? Regardless, we can see that #COVID19 was related to 7% of ANY death recorded in a home over this 4-week period.
Age/gender - unsurprisingly, again, we see that it's largely men over 75 who have died from #coronavirus. In fact 70% of deaths were attributed to people who were 75+. Just 8 ppl between 15-44 died...
Health board - Glasgow, Lothian and Lanarkshire health boards recorded the most #COVID19 deaths to date. Given population sizes this is no major surprise...however per capita the most deaths are actually happening in Glasgow, Borders, and Shetland...
