Ok twitter - the facts on wet markets from a vet. Keeping different species together in close proximity is dangerous.
1. Pigs and chicken should never be kept next to each other - they can swap influenza A and transmit new variants to people.
2. Wild cloven hooves animals (deer, pigs etc) should never enter a wet market as they pose a huge risk of creating a foot and mouth outbreak especially in Asia and Africa
3. Novel species can introduce viruses to new hosts they have never had access to. A classic example is Hendravirus in Australia which is fatal to horses and then, (due to their high viral loads) humans. It claimed the life of a veterinary colleague of mine in Rockhampton.
I could go on but @CSIRO @nswdpi @NationalFarmers have helped develop rules and practices here that protect animals and people. Others should learn from our expertise.
