Small rant - when I worked at OHCOW, many of the workers that I consulted with after having their injury claims denied were personal support workers - those who were working at long term care facilities. Many of the times their claims were denied (1/5)
Because they worked in multiple facilities, and the board said you couldn’t pin the injury on any one of their employers. These PSWs had to work in multiple locations because their wages were criminally low (often around minimum wage) (2/5)
With the COVID-19 pandemic, they are now not allowed to work in multiple facilities - meaning they will have their already low income reduced while probably not qualifying for CERB. Yet, here we are, hearing that they are heroes and applauding the province for acknowledging (3/5)
The contributions of PSWs. How many times have these workers been told they’re unskilled, under qualified, or replaceable and now they’re being viewed as important? These are intensely physical and emotional jobs - ones that I bet you and I wouldn’t last a day in (4/5)
If PSWs are not better protected in future legislation, how can we expect high quality of care for our seniors or sick friends and families? It sounds like steps are being taken in the right direction, but remember all of this the next time we hear about who isn’t skilled (5/5).
