More recently claims have been made that the signal was actually picked up by a 14 year old boy, while Jack was away from his post. Others more au fait with the story may have views on this one way or another. What I do know is that in February 1915 Jack signed up in Canada..2
He arrived in England in May and sought a Commission with the British Army, joining the Royal Sussex Regt. He went to France in March 1916, posted to the 7th Battalion. On 7 July he was killed in action in an attack on German lines east of Ovillers...3
