But the UK is lagging behind France, Italy and Spain in its lockdown compliance rate - all have much tougher restrictions. Key numbers:

- Footfall in recreational areas and shops down 78%

- Britons passing through transport stations down 73%

But Britons have been much less strict about staying away from parks (visitors are allowed for exercise)

Initially, footfall in green spaces dropped by 50%, but then rose over the sunny Easter weekend to make the overall fall 30%.

FT’s analysis of Google Maps data shows some parks in cities were busier over this Easter weekend than during the same time in recent years.

Richmond Park in London, Sefton Park in Liverpool and Queens Park in Brighton saw some of the biggest rises.

But in other urban green spaces, visitors fell over during the Easter weekend.

Town Moor in Newcastle, Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow and Battersea Park in London all had lower footfalls than in recent years.

Senior ministers in the Johnson government are surprised at how the measure have been adhered to:

“The lockdown has been far more successful than expected. People have responded much better under law than when they were asked by the prime minister.” https://www.ft.com/content/3a654170-d53c-4efa-862a-027496fb6289
