Journey's End is the next tweetalong, hey? Lots to like about that finale. Having al those returning characters, and having Davros in the new series for the first time, is basically RTD throwing sweets at you. Which is obviously delightful. A fizzy rush.
What happens to Donna is remarkably cruel. I think her dying would've seemed less harsh somehow?!? It's kind of a downbeat, miserable end for such a loved character. A character who learned and changed so much. :(
Basically showing how much grimmer RTD's sensibilities can be than Moff's, it's just hidden beneath all the bright colours, sweets, and 'hoorays!'.
Packing Rose off with a spare 10th Doctor to kiss and sex up is a pretty awful move, though. I can't imagine what the reaction would be if Moff or Chibbers tried that shit.
The way companions end up is another signifier of how different RTD and Moff's sensibilities could be, which is brought up in the ep itself. Rose, Mickey, and Martha have been turned into 'weapons'. Into fighters, an army.
People called Moff dark, but Clara gets to basically become the Doc, Bill gets to shoot around the universe with her girlfriend as some sort of super-being, Amy & Rory get to live a long, happy life together. All in all, more pleasant outcomes for the Dc's best friends.
And, you know, this is Doctor Who, not Game of Thrones, so I prefer lots of light rather than dark at the end of our friend's journeys. There's bittersweet there, but outweighed by the good.
What was I talking about? Oh yes. That cliffhanger to part one of the finale is obviously an all-timer. Even if I didn't buy for a single second that we were going to get the next Doctor when part two started. (I'm sure more general viewers were fooled)
It's the second-best finale of the RTD era. It's very good. Would've been a better endpoint for Tennant's Doc, I reckon, too.
Because it's a better episode than End of TIme, and after his leaving announcement, having to go through a slow drip-feed of not always so 'special' special's, really made me eager for the next Doc and made me feel like Tennant was somehow 'overstaying' his welcome.
Go out with Journey's End and you leave with a feeling of having gone a touch early, which I think is better.
