The group i am volunteering with have encountered a wealth of staff who work for the NHS but are agency. They dont get NHS email or status, yet all their work is in NHS venues. Many MH wards run on mostly agency staff, its part of the stealth privatisation.

It took a while for them to find us as they didnt think they'd qualify for support/help because they've been told they arent 'real NHS' because their paychecks come from agencies.

They are on corona wards too. One nurse is sleeping in their car to avoid infecting their high risk child. They walk to work as they dont want to risk the buses and risk passengers and drivers. They were told they couldnt take up the free taxi offers etc

There are thousands of people working for the NHS who are zero hours contract agency workers. There used to be full time jobs in those positions but they got destroyed by managers wanting to revoke paid leave, pensions etc.

So whilst all these PR gestures of free things and discounts are nice, i doubt many of the lowest paid, most vulnerable frontline workers will even know they exist or be able to access them.

Care homes, mental health in patients, ortho, physio, etc So many departments are stripped down like this. As are services within the hospitals. The cleaners, the maintenance teams, security, catering, all the little hidden cogs are often agency now. Often zero hours.
