25. #hcafc 3-1 Chesterfield - Apr 2001
The most joyous run of form City had enjoyed since the mid-80s. Crooked opponents battered, Boothferry Park in full voice, Sup Kev netting and automatic promotion looking like it was on. We were emerging from the dark, finally.
24. Bradford 0-2 #hcafc - Apr 2005
The day that promotion to the Championship was all but sealed. @Craigfagan7 and Junior having their best games for City, Deano in what was surely his last professional game involving his home-town club, the home end taken by City fans. Perfect.
23. #hcafc 3-0 Luton – Oct 2004
Top-of-the-table Luton destroyed by City just as Stuart Elliott’s amazing scoring run was getting started. Promotion hadn’t really been spoken of until this comprehensive victory but this laid the foundations. The KC was on fire too.
22. Swansea 2-3 #hcafc - Apr 2004
We’d been wobbling towards the end of the 2003/04 season. We’d just lost at home to Northampton, but this game – complete with half-time bust-up between @AshbeeIan and @Marcjoseph_MJ and a late @benkburgess winner – got promotion back on track.
21. #hcafc 6-1 Tranmere – Dec 2004
The best games often seal an achievement or are tightly fought contests. Thrashing a promotion rival in comedy circumstances is great fun too though. The sight of Theo Whitmore in goal will never leave those who witnessed this game.
20. Liverpool 2-2 #hcafc - Dec 2008
Would be higher had Alan Wiley not been mesmerised by Steven Gerrard but seeing City ahead at Anfield was incredible, and this was the final exceptional game in the club’s finest ever year. One of two outstanding displays by Bernard Mendy.
19. Barnsley 0-3 #hcafc - Apr 2008
A joyous evening. City swatted aside a team that had seemingly put a nail in our coffin the season before, and marched into the top two. At that stage it seemed we were unstoppable. The feeling coming back from the game was sensational.
18. Bournemouth 0-4 #hcafc - Mar 2005
A sunny weekend in a coastal town, a 4-0 win, Delaney scoring from a free-kick. Away trips don’t get better than this. Heard a girl in a pizza shop in B’mouth say “If I hear anyone else talking about Hull City tonight I’ll scream”. Ha!
17. Spurs 0-1 #hcafc - Oct 2008
Had we not beaten Arsenal the week before, this would be much higher. But that shouldn’t take anything away from a game involving an exceptional Geovanni free-kick and a fantastic team defensive effort. Surreal times.
16. #hcafc 1-0 Orient – May 2001
The last truly great occasion at Boothferry Park. @johnnyeyre1974’s goal in front of the South Stand saw amazing scenes. It wasn’t to be, but for one afternoon at least, we could dream that our decade-long nightmare was over.
15. Newcastle 1-2 #hcafc - Sep 2008
Our first ever away win the the Premier League. We were to top it a few weeks later but this was big. It showed that we weren’t the ‘Derby’ so many had been predicting us to be. We meant business. And how big were those three points to prove…
14. #hcafc 1-0 Leeds – Apr 2006
The 2005/06 season wasn’t particularly memorable, apart from one player – @Parky08 – and one match, the win against Leeds. When AP had taken us over we were in a different stratosphere to them. Now we were beating them as equals.
13. Fulham 0-1 #hcafc - Mar 2009
The dream was turning into a nightmare. We couldn’t buy a win. Then this. A drab game in which we’d defending resolutely until injury time. @RichGarcia19 crosses. Manucho scores. This may well be the craziest I’ve ever celebrated a City goal.
12. #hcafc 3-1 Doncaster – Dec 2003
Donny had gone from plucky upstarts to genuine promotion challengers by this point, so to beat them in front of a packed, festive KC Stadium was very sweet. That the unsung Jason Price got a hat-trick made it all the sweeter.
11. Tranmere 1-3 #hcafc – Mar 2005
We’d not been in the best of form leading up to this game, and an early goal for Rovers made it such a nervy game. But then our class told and a goal from debutant @Craigfagan7 made this the sweetest of wins. “3-1, with your keepers on.”
10. #hcafc 2-1 Fulham – Aug 2008
A difficult one to place this, as it meant the world, we came back from behind to win with a late winner from @Folan, and all was well. But it still feels like a party game, an ‘occasion’ more than a league match. It was ace though.
9. #hcafc 1-0 Swansea – Sep 2003
The night, to my mind, when the KC was born. People locked out, quality opposition, a defensive masterclass and a bullet header for the winner. Peter Taylor’s Tigers meant business that year. Walking away from the KC that night, we knew that.
8. Watford 0-2 #hcafc – May 2008
A wonderful, boiling hot afternoon, an early goal luckily ruled out, goals for the two Hull lads, @AshbeeIan winding Watford up, Boaz pulling off worldies, Nathan Doyle doing stepovers, and one foot planted firmly in Wembley. Perfect.
7. West Brom 1-2 #hcafc – Feb 2008
The game we went from wannabes to heavyweights. To go to the Hawthorns and win is never an easy task. To deserve the victory and gain it with a fantastic late @Folan winner… Something special was brewing. You could taste it.
6. Cardiff 0-1 #hcafc – May 2007
A weird game in that it wasn’t much of a showpiece and I’m still not convinced about how much Cardiff wanted it. But it meant so much. Going backwards after all we'd done was unthinkable. A fitting end to @DWindass10's City career too…
5. Sheffield Weds 2-4 #hcafc – Dec 2004
The best game of the lot for the neutral, and to be in the away end was just a privilege. This was City showing Premier League ambition, in every sense. And there was that amazing bit of skill – I’m referring to @Frenchdog13’s flick-on…
4. #hcafc 4-1 Watford – May 2008
When Henderson’s shot went in, I just felt sick. Typical City was going to rear its ugly head, wasn’t it? When @Folan's header went in I felt an elation only sport can provide. Sheer delirium. We were on our way to Wembley. What a night.
3. Arsenal 1-2 #hcafc – Oct 2008
I remember taking photos of the scoreboard at half-time, amazed that we’d held Arsenal for 45 minutes. Little did we know... I couldn’t believe what I was seeing when Cousin’s header hit the back of the net. @AshbeeIan's best match for City too.
2. Yeovil 1-2 #hcafc – May 2004
The nightmare was over. Those of us who had endured the struggles of the 90s, put donations in the buckets to pay the players, were rewarded. And that it was the great @AshbeeIan that scored a late winner… perfect. An emotional afternoon.
1. Bristol City 0-1 #hcafc – May 2008
I’ll never get to feel that way at a football game again, but I don’t mind. After all we’d been through in our history, and then to go on to experience a dizzying high like this, I’m just grateful that I ever got to feel this way at all.
