Oh where do I begin here
1. asia is not a monolith! okay i get media does shove a very limited idea of what Asian is to us but please educate yourself on how diverse asia is!! OF COURSE WE WONT SHARE THE SAME EXACT CULTURE AS LIKE CHINA OR KOREA. we do have a (similar, but not exact) history of
being victims of colonization and imperialism with other countries in asia though (see: India & Vietnam!) we do share that influence being colonized by spain and again, we dont have the same history as india and vietnam but colonization and imperialism is a part of Asia
JAPAN IS ALSO AN ISLAND TECHNICALLY. but no one argues its not asian. that is not an indicator of being pacific islander just bc we're made of islands in the pacific ocean. also, they have their own culture and history that is inappropriate to claim as ours
oh because a google search knows more than people who live there all their lives. i do feel bad other asians ignorantly dont count filipinos as asians and again this really is identity confusion which i 100% get, but thats why we need to listen to those in the ph
more education needs to be done on asian history in general because the problem with labeling filipino culture as not fitting in fits the narrative of asia being a monolith. east asia is not all of asia. it is a diverse continent and ph having a unique history and culture
doesnt mean it is not an asian country. they hosted the fucking SEA game, sociopolitically and geographically it is in Asia and there are more similarities (but not totally the same) within southeast asian cultures if you looked into that too
i do see how mexicans and filipinos can identify closely with another because of a similar background of coming from countries colonized by spain, but again, education matters that our plights may have similarities but are fucking different. we can build solidarity
without claiming another culture as our own. (im gonna say this again: this all is from identity confusion and a lack of knowledge on the history. can we please fucking fund more asian studies courses)
"we're considered all, it comes down to how the person identifies" we are not considered all? filipinos as a group are southeast asian. the confusion people have and ignorance others have does not erase that
honestly cultural identity can get confusing in cases and i see a need for spaces to really discuss it but we're being disrespectful talking over people in the ph and refusing to learn our history to voice out this narrative.
there's a lot of things factually off and i know so much of this is because of being disconnected from growing up in the west but for the love of god please, instead of being arrogant, actually listen to people who grew up and live in the philippines, who know more on the history
