Really wish people wouldn't consume media from other cultures/countries and then get mad when said media doesn't cater to their culture's/country's beliefs!
PLEASE remember that if you consume Japanese or Chinese works of fiction and you aren't of either ethnicity/don't live in either country, you aren't the target audience! You can still enjoy their media but the target audience is people who live in those countries and thus
understand the cultural (and religious) nuances. Not only are they writing for a different audience than, say, an American writer would be, but A) society is different and B) the governments are different -- an in the case of China, there's a lot of censorship going on.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with liking media from other cultures/countries, and if anything it should be encouraged. But at the same time, getting mad when those works share different viewpoints (especially ones related to LGBT+ issues) isn't really appropriate...
Of course, creators who write sexist/racist/queerphobic things should absolutely be held accountable but also remember that a lot of the time they're not entirely in charge of their own work, either. With anime and manga, I know sometimes creators want to create a certain story
but they can't convey it because of either censorship, the platform it's published in (website, magazine, etc), sponsors (mostly for anime), etc. See Yuri!!! on ICE's m/m kiss for an example.

Also, magazine editors in terms of manga can be quite influential.
Lastly stop talking over queer Japanese/Chinese people, especially if you're white. It's not your place. Just sit back and enjoy the stories you consume. Critique them, absolutely, but remember: English fans are not the target audience for non-English works, AND THAT'S OKAY!
(Please excuse any typos I'm tired and I'm getting sick of this lol. Pure disclaimer: I myself am white, and I'm not trying to speak for anyone. I'm just trying to remind people that sometimes they need to take a step back.)
Just... remember that government censorship is a massive issue in China and their government hates queer people. Writing explicit danmei is illegal. In Japan, creators have more freedom, but societal pressure to be "normal" is still a thing and therefore Japanese works aren't as
"progressive" as people may want them to be (Like I said though, that doesn't excuse blatantly sexist, racist, queerphobic content or anything similar. It's just an explanation as to why things are the way they are!)
So this is getting a little bit of attention even though I made this thread without putting a heap of thought into it and some things should probably be reworded. That said, respect content creators, especially foreign content creators, and enjoy foreign media for what it is
but don’t try and change it into something that it isn’t because of your own cultural beliefs. Call out obvious bigotry but also understand societal and governmental influences and different laws about what people can and can’t depict, especially in LGBT+ media!
