Two young disciples were walking in the forest when they came across a beautiful young lady sitting beside a narrow river and crying piteously.

When questioned, she said, she had crossed the river from her village on the other side to pluck flowers with her friends. They had gone back but she developed cramps in her legs and could not swim back. They promised to get help but no one came.

“Can you please help me cross?” she begged.

“No” said one, “we are celibates. Our Guru has said close contact with females is bad for our spiritual progress.”

The other brahmachari said, “But the Guru also said we should help anyone in need. To help one being is equivalent to ten days of meditation. So I'll help you.”

So he let her climb on his shoulders and carried her across, wading through the chest deep water. The other brahmachari followed with a grim expression.

Dropping her in the village head’s house, they continued walking through the forest on the other side. It would take them hours to reach the Ashram.

“Brother”, said the brahmachari, who had carried the girl across to his companion, “Why have you stopped talking to me? Why are you so angry?”

7/9
“You have broken the vow,” said the other. “You carried a female, had close contact.”

“But that was six hours ago”, said his friend. I left her in the village long ago. I am free and why are you still carrying her in your mind?”

To work, to help, to be kind, and not be attached or obsessed is the spiritual way of life.

Be free at all times.
