A few years ago, I was dating a professor at a major university. We took a trip to her campus, and she showed me whole neighborhoods full of very wealthy Chinese students with truly insane luxury cars.

She laughed at me when I suggested that the campus was certainly crawling with Chinese spies.

I asked, “You guys probably have some major DOD lab here, right?”

“Huh. As a matter of fact, we do.”

She was no dummy. But the idea of espionage was so far from her imagination.

Even if I’d convinced her to do something about it, the resistance to bringing this up at the administration level would’ve been crushing. Maybe times have changed, but I doubt it.
