(1) In the presidential election of 1800, Burr and Jefferson tied in the Electoral College, which threw the election into the House. There the Federalists offered Burr the votes he needed to become president, if he would secretly make concessions to their agenda.
(2) Offended by the concept of a secret deal, Burr refused. The less scrupulous Jefferson grabbed the secret deal with his political enemies, only too happy to trade his ideals for the office. Coincidentally the House elected him on the very next ballot.
(3) On his inauguration day, the hypocritical Jefferson actually had the nerve to proclaim his election as, “the revolution of 1800!” He never forgave Burr for having more integrity than he did, and he dedicated much of his energy to destroying his hated rival’s career.
(3) This culminated when Jefferson had Burr arrested and indicted for treason without compelling evidence. Both before and during the trial President Jefferson pronounced his former colleague guilty. He even ordered evidence to be fabricated against Burr.
(4) It is a matter of historical record that the jury acquitted Aaron Burr of these charges, but his political future was hopelessly shattered.
