Today, a district began distance learning. I spoke with an elementary specials teacher in physical education who planned for weeks to update her LMS page with content, schedules, routines, and a way to engage every student with meaningful content.
Her principal decided on Friday that instead she& #39;d rather the specials teachers meet for 15 minutes with an ENTIRE GRADE LEVEL of students (90 - 100 children) AT THE SAME TIME in a synchronous session with a video program that only shows 6 windows at a time.
Administrators, if you think your plan is better than the content expert who put in weeks of time and planning to assure an educational experience despite a pandemic, you& #39;re wrong.
If you need to exert your power this much to control schedules to feel important, please consider micromanaging how to minimize emails, paperwork, and virtual meetings that could have been an email.
You go right ahead and micromanage the hell out of a schedule so teachers know when they need to be present for staff meetings well in advance instead of telling them at 10 pm on Sunday night that they& #39;ve got a mandatory 7:30 am staff meeting.
Grasps at power and control didn& #39;t start because of the pandemic; they are heightened because of people& #39;s sense of loss of control.
This example of lack of power distribution in schools amongst teachers and administrators during a time when teachers did a NOVEL THING is yet another part of the system of education that begs for redesign.

What would it look like to have designed "what& #39;s best for students" with multiple stakeholders involved?
Yes, I know...time, urgency.

Would it have taken *that much time* to ask a sample of parents, students, teachers, administrators, and staff what they thought would be best for students during this time?

How do we get to a space of mutual respect and trust that allows us to see each of the different stakeholders in education as an asset instead of a burden to work with?

For the last few weeks, I& #39;ve been thinking of #EducationRedesign.
I& #39;m using this hashtag as a way to help us communicate collectively.
What would you redesign in the system of education if you could? Why?

What would you redesign in the system of education if you could? Why?
What& #39;s an oppressive, inequitable system/process/material that you are now aware of that you would redesign before re-entering the classroom?
What sites of potential might schools be in dismantling these systems?
Join me in imagining what could be...

Here& #39;s one I started thinking about the other day: https://twitter.com/LBmathemagician/status/1250055306215858180?s=20">https://twitter.com/LBmathema...
We have a heightened awareness right now of how inequitable it is to assign work to be done at home with the variance in resources (human, financial, material, and emotional) across schools and classrooms.
It& #39;s TRANSPARENT that this is inequitable. Please some one tell me why instruction outside of school hours is necessary....
