I have thoughts re: this. Plus ladderism which is confused with networking. Though there are people who will use networking as a form of ladderism to get where they want to go.

To echo Jaymee's words: surround yourself with friends and people whom you want to be with. It's not networking per se. Meet people with the same interest, who will ring true to you.

And always listen to your gut instinct. Always.
