Final Fantasy 7 remake is pretty incredible but a couple of initial nit picks. First and foremost is a technology and cultural disparity. There is this mishmash if the steampunk Victorian London Midgar look from the og game along with this mordern look for the npcs. 1/6
Seeing Cloud and company walk next to these people on the train looks silly and takes me out of the games they look like they’re in costumes. You can’t change the look of the heroes of course, so some cohesion with the npcs would have been my goal. 2/6
There are old looking steampunk engines and pipes everywhere but also touchpad/iPhone looking technology not present in the original. Also there were fire engines that looked straight out of our time alongside cars that look like the ones from the original. 3/6
It doesn’t feel like a progression of tech ether, just a layer on top it doesn’t work for me. I would have like to have seen technology that evolved along with the steam engine look of the enemies and original setting. 4/6
Also Sephiroth is introduced WAY too early. Let’s set up some mystery, anticipation. It would have been cooler to tease his reveal. So that when we get to the scene in Nibelhiem we’re chomping at the bit for it. 5/6
All that being said I’m really enjoying it so far, and I will write another thread on my thoughts on the Art assets themselves later. 6/6
