some of u are truly out here buying fucking surgery just to have the exact same nose as every other woman and saying "actually this is my feminism :)" the cognitive dissonance i
listen if someone is genuinely going after you for getting cosmetic surgery or wearing a full face of makeup or wearing a waist trainer or shaving or WHAT have you, then that is not cool bc i dont think anyone should be shamed for their choices and what makes them feel good
BUT... those practices are super fucking rooted in misogyny and in capitalism, and you cannot deny that fact! im tired of seeing people making decent arguments against the beauty industry or about how we shouldnt rely on those practices for confidence/happiness...
... only for some poor soul to log on and be all "well actually this is MY choice and MY body and it makes ME happy" well great except YOU and YOUR body do not exist in a vacuum
if it makes you happy thats great! you do you! but it makes you happy for a reason, and that reason is probably not self-expression, it's probably because now you're even closer to beauty standards that are cruel, sexist, fatphobic, racist, ablesit NOT TO MENTION FAKE
beauty standards are social constructs, so is beauty for that matter. im js that you're not doing these things in a vacuum, patriarchy is directly affecting you and your choices.
its hard to break out of you and im not saying you have to (again, do what makes you happy) but do not fool yourself into thinking you're somehow empowered for buying into an industry that is designed to keep you feeling shitty about yourself so that you buy more
do not go after ppl who are (rightfully) critiquing this kind of stuff. like i said before, if someone is going directly after you for wearing makeup or smth then fuck that person, but if what they're saying is "it's not feminist to wear makeup" then listen! u dont have to agree
just consider the possibility that your habits or some of the stuff you wanna spend big $ on is not as good for you as you'd like to think. dont shut the argument down as being anti-woman just because YOU like to do your brows every day
and i tweet all this but im not some feminist saint like i still shave most of my body hair off in the summer (even tho i like growing it out), and yeah the smooth feeling is fucking great but that is NOT why i shave, and i would never tell anyone thats why i shave
we shouldnt tear each other down, we should always aim to lift each other up. and part of doing that is having honest discussions abt this stuff, and we cant do that when some of you are sticking your fingers in your ears and screaming "IT MAKES ME CONFIDENT! THIS IS FEMINISM!"
THIS THREAD IS SO LONG im sorry i just get rlly fired up. final notes: 1) im referring to cosmetic surgery not plastic surgery in general; 2) makeup can be super expressive and artistic when used that way, i was mostly referring to shit like having a "beat" face or "hiding flaws"
wowee thanks for reading all of that if u did. now time to apply all these sociology vibes to the sociology essays that i actually have to write K THX BYEEEEE
