DeWine said today "we lost 50 people in the last 24 hours." That's inaccurate.

The Ohio Department of Health *learned* of 50 additional COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours. That includes 5 people who died today and 7 who died yesterday for 12 since yesterday's report. 1/5
Reported deaths, like cases and even hospitalizations, are lagging several days. The 50 "new" deaths today include a death of a Cuyahoga County woman on March 14, which predates the first announced death by 4 days. 2/5
When the state learns of a death or case, it is reported in the cumulative total for that day.

It is also reported, separately, in this bar chart for the actual date the person died, which explains the difference in numbers. https://coronavirus.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/covid-19/dashboards 3/5
Here's a chart showing Ohio's 324 deaths by the day each person died. When I last looked at this data before last week, it made a similar shape - a "peak" 5-7 days prior. That "peak" has since continued. That's likely because of reporting delays. 4/5
All of this is to say, it's possible there have been 50 deaths in the last 24 hours -- future reports could add to the tally for today for several weeks. But that's not what today's 50-death increase shows. 5/5
