Added context: the majority of fujoshi in Japan are wlw. That's another part of why women who enjoy BL are shamed--because not only do they "reject normal media", but they "reject normal relationships", as well. https://twitter.com/Ccommersonii/status/1249764116278865920
To any antis who might be questioning themselves right now, from an ex-anti: Fujoshi aren't shamed for "fetishizing gay relationships". Similarly in the US, shippers aren't shamed by the general public for "fetishizing", either. We're shamed because of homophobia and sexism.
All those "normal" people we've claimed are on our side? They're not agreeing with us, either. "Normal" people dislike shippers indiscriminately, regardless of how "problematic" a ship is.
All those "normal people" aren't supporting "unproblematic" ships. They hate ALL shippers because they're uncomfortable with ALL queer depictions and ANY hint of women bring sexual instead of just sexy.
When you join all the "normal" people in demanding that "gross" content be removed and obliterated, you have to realize that all those "normal" people want queer and woman-made content removed. Not "problematic" content.
Go look up "Strikethrough". That's a real event that happened where "adult" content was removed from fandom websites like http://FanFiction.Net , and it was hugely queer. Why do you think it's specifically AO3 that has so many queer fics and queer creators?
"Normal" people think queer, trans, and female creators and any content we have that represents us is INHERENTLY more adult, more taboo. And despite any efforts we've made to prove otherwise, they still think that's true.
Why do you think people protest louder over queer couples being shown in kid's shows? Because we are not seen as "normal"! Yey think we're obscene! Cishet people and cishet men think we're all freaks!!
It doesn't matter if you're vanilla and would shoot a loli artist on sight. If you're a shipper, no matter how "unproblematic" your content, they're going to stick you in the same basket as the loli artist.
Openly hating and trying to eradicate all the "freaks" is not going to save you. It's not going to save us. It's not even going to protect survivors like me from getting hurt again.
I want you to understand that joining up with all the "normal" people means prioritizing "normal" identities and systems. It means you're trying to gain privilege by showing that you're "not a freak" while forgetting that privilege exists by oppressing "freaks" like you.
We cannot win by proving that we're "not like those freaks". Doing so will only turn us into a tool against our own. You will only be seen as "acceptable" until they become afraid of you again.
We as queer, trans, BIPOC, women, etc. have never gained our rights by proving ourselves to be "normal". We have never won through acceptability politics. We've won by deliberately being disruptive. And we've won by loving and taking care of each other.
