Dear Minister @rebeccakschulz: The statement that the province was at less than 80% child care capacity pre-pandemic is problematic because:
#ChildCareMattersAlberta
#1: The number of licensed spaces in which a centre is approved generally exceeds the actual operating capacity. #ChildCareMattersAlberta
#2: Many programs cannot attract enough staff to operate at full licensed capacity. #ChildCareMattersAlberta
3. While some communities have vacant child care spaces, there are many more that have child care deserts in which there are no care options. For e.g., a child care space in downtown Edm is not available to a family in need of child care in High Prairie. #ChildCareMattersAlberta
This is a distribution and planning issue of the current child care system in Alberta. Stating <80% capacity is misleading and not a valid measurement. #ChildCareMattersAlberta
Looking forward to discussing how to ensure we have a well educated, well supported and well planned child care system in Alberta. #ChildCareMattersAlberta
