For those interested in how online lessons are working.
1. Teacher spends 10 mins explaining the task.
2. Everyone leaves the chat but teacher stays online if kids need help.
3. Kids are connecting with classmates to talk through what they are doing.
I can hear 12yo having a really good chat with one of his friends about their Art task and sharing ideas about what they are doing.

Only issue seems to be a few connectivity issues when everyone is in the group together (where is awesome NBN infrastructure when we need it https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="đŸ˜«" title="Tired face" aria-label="Emoji: Tired face">?)
For those who have messaged - my kids go to our local government school. May be different structure at Catholic/Independent schools.
It’s really interesting to hear how the kids are talking to each other and problem solving. I wonder if this is going to be a nice outcome from remote learning. Without a teacher in front of them they are learning how to work things out themselves. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="đŸ€·â€â™€ïž" title="Woman shrugging" aria-label="Emoji: Woman shrugging">
Its interesting to hear how much feedback they give each other.

Maybe we underestimate children’s ability to connect & support each other with their learning?

I thought I would be really having to help our 12yo, but him and his classmates are really working well together.
Observations from 15yo (Year 10).

1. Much better than he expected.

2. Clear instructions from teachers at start of each subject.

3. No distractions in class so getting his work done much more efficiently

4. Work is submitted to teachers at the end of class for feedback. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="👏" title="Clapping hands sign" aria-label="Emoji: Clapping hands sign">
It’s now ‘recess’.

Had lunch. Kids are using this an an opportunity to get some physical activity into the day (hoop time https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🏀" title="Basketball" aria-label="Emoji: Basketball">!)

Was actually really nice to hear what they had learnt in class this morning.

Well done to the teachers. Clearly a lot of thought gone into this.
Okay the ‘after recess’ class is a bit tricky to get motivated for. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😂" title="Face with tears of joy" aria-label="Emoji: Face with tears of joy">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😂" title="Face with tears of joy" aria-label="Emoji: Face with tears of joy">

Teachers might have to put a bit more thinking into how to get the engagement and enthusiasm up again after lunch. (Maybe not just an issue with remote but may also happen at physical school too?)
15yo continuing to enjoy the day at home. One difference is that he is getting a really quick turn around on work he is submitting. Submitted his Biology work and was marked and sent back to him with feedback almost immediately.
Finding with 12yo (year 7) that he is working really well with his friend. Needs a bit more prompting this afternoon to keep him focused.
Have only had to help 12yo with a couple of questions today.

“What are strategies that can be used to look after your mental health?”

I liked his answer:

“Do things that make you feel good.”

Might make that my new life motto. https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😃" title="Smiling face with open mouth" aria-label="Emoji: Smiling face with open mouth">https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😃" title="Smiling face with open mouth" aria-label="Emoji: Smiling face with open mouth">
2.30pm: 15yo has finished all his work for the day (plus extension work) so it’s just hanging out with his friend online. Great that they still have social connection in the day.

(Just had to remind him that his brother was still working so he needed to keep it down! https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😂" title="Face with tears of joy" aria-label="Emoji: Face with tears of joy">)
Another observation. Both the boys are doing extension work as they are getting their regular school work done more quickly than they normally would. Might be something for teachers to keep in mind? Less distractions in class = more students able to do extension work?
Today has been really good. Some thoughts:

1. 12yo (year 7) definitely worked better in a pair. Might be worth pairing up students?
2. They got through work a lot faster. So there was more room for them to do extension.
3. 15yo (year 10/11) really appreciated quick feedback.
For parents:

1. They worked really well in the morning. I was able to get heaps of work done.
2. Bit more help needed in the afternoon. Mainly encouragement and focus.
3. Getting them to do some physical activity at lunch was helpful and broke up the day a bit.
