It's National Assembly elections day here in South Korea. Voters are flocking to polling stations despite coronavirus. At 8am we're already at 5% turnout vs 4.1% four years ago.

Authorities are pulling out all the stops to ensure elections are carried out safely. #국회의원선거
How are South Koreans voting today?

- voters must wear masks and gloves
- temperature taken at entrance
- 1m distance must be kept (markings on floor too)
- facilities disinfected throughout
What if a voter has respiratory symptoms or has a temperature above 37.5°C?

South Korean authorities have got that sorted out, you vote in a separate booth that is ventilated and disinfected.
Also, for people who are under compulsory self-isolation, that's sorted too: they will be able to vote under very strict rules. Will be allowed outside today between 5:20-7pm, escorted and only allowed to go vote. Nothing else. https://twitter.com/koryodynasty/status/1249264988717375495?s=20
Self-isolators would have received a text message asking about will to vote today. If they have no symptoms, they can go just before polls close to avoid everyone else. Voters must go to designated local polling station, so we are talking of a handful (or less?) of people.
A few weeks ago, Pres Moon Jae-in & ruling Democratic Party's approval ratings fell due to coronavirus outbreak.

And then the botched response abroad (especially in the West) happened, making many here re-evaluate their country's response.

Moon's latest rating shot up to 54.4%.
Currently trending on Twitter Korea: 투표완료 (finished voting).

A rebound for Daegu which is currently voting strong with already 8.2% local turnout as of 8:45am. Daegu is the conservative stronghold of the country, also the city hardest hit by the coronavirus, having become the epicentre of the outbreak in early days.
Another word trending on Twitter Korea is 어르신들 (elderly people), citizens noting that older people are lining up and keen to get their votes cast early on in the day.
At 9am, the turnout is 8.0% vs 7.1% four years ago.

This despite coronavirus, yet coronavirus is on everyone's minds.

Early voting, home voting, shipboard voting, and overseas voting will be added to the tally at 1pm.
Early voting closed the other day with a record turnout of 26.7%. These figures as well as home voting, shipboard voting and overseas voting will be added to the count at 1pm today. https://twitter.com/koryodynasty/status/1248916188802867200
Hopeful candidates are out voting now, including former Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon who is running for Seoul's Jongno District.

Many expect him to win this important seat, which could pave the way for his next stop: the presidential Blue House. https://twitter.com/nylee21/status/1250215993512624128
Random fact: some candidates running in today's elections have heavy criminal records. One was convicted for murder decades ago. https://twitter.com/koryodynasty/status/1244100808636944384?s=19

Latest coronavirus data in South Korea just out, 27 new cases. Has been hovering around that number for about a week now, with about half of those coming from abroad.

Community infections are now extremely low in numbers. https://twitter.com/koryodynasty/status/1250230301197873152
Just in: It's 1pm and the turnout in the #KoreanElection2020 is now at 49.7%.

That's a full 11.8%p more than 37.9% four years ago.

The reason for the surge since midday is that early voting, home voting, shipboard voting, and overseas voting have been added to the count.
Ok we're now at 2pm with a turnout of 56.5%, which equates to 10%p more than the same time 4 years ago (46.5%).

At this rate, we should be past the total 58.0% turnout from the 20th National Assembly election by 4pm.

#KoreanElection2020
That said, we might expect to see a slower turnout rate 1-2 hours before polls close as people might choose to avoid polling stations at that time: closing time is when people under self-isolation due to coronavirus will be allowed to go vote. https://twitter.com/koryodynasty/status/1249264988717375495
Ok it's official: these #KoreanElection2020 now have the highest turnout ever despite coronavirus, breaking the 2004 record of 60.6%.

We're now at 62.6%. 1 hour to go.

Meanwhile, those in self-isolation will soon be able to vote.
Polls close at 6:00pm. That said, so long as someone arrives before 6:00pm, they will be given a numbered ticket and be allowed to vote.

For this reason, the final count will be given by media at 6:15pm. https://twitter.com/koryodynasty/status/1249265156107862017?s=20
As of 5:20pm, 27,541,591 South Koreans have voted.

Minus home voting etc, that basically means:

27 million South Koreans have had their body temperatures checked over the past few days.
Ok polls are now in the process of closing here in South Korea. Polls close at 6:00pm (now), but voters are still eligible to vote assuming they are still in line. #415총선
