-Chitch Thread-

Chitch is incredibly important in the context of Berserk. Miura makes it clear that selfish dreams are dangerous attempts to escape the struggles of life, and can lead to hurting those you care about

If a selfish dream’s not the answer, is it selfless sacrifice?
2) Just like Guts says to Schierke on the beach, “you only distract yourself like that... so cleverly set in your ways, worryin’ about everyone but yourself. If you keep that up now as a kid... you’ll be old before your time.” Chitch found temporary warmth in Guts
3) This temporary warmth made her so grateful that she forgot about herself, plucking all her own leaves to heal Guts. In sacrificing herself, she ended up causing him pain. When we selflessly sacrifice ourselves, it inevitably leads to hurting the people we care about most
4) Chitch could have lived on, and Guts could have been content knowing she was still out there. But her self sacrifice, in the end, only increased the burden on Guts’s shoulders
5) 4) So if the answer isn’t a selfish dream or selfless sacrifice, what is it? I think the answer lies in looking at it all as a spectrum, not a binary. To keep our ambitions, but not let them trample over others. To care for others, but not self sacrifice
5) Sacrifice isn’t the same as working together. Instead of trying to be a savior, it’s better to be a collaborator. We can hold onto our dreams, see the value in others’ dreams, and work together to make it all happen ^-^
