My mother’s experience with the virus was something we didn’t see or hear on the news. We assumed she was having a stroke. Unfortunately I’m NYC, you can not enter a hospital unless you are the patient. Two days later we received the news that she was positive with the virus.
Years ago my mother had a minor stroke, which only caused her to have a speech problem. Due to that her nervous system never really recovered but she was able to live her everyday life as normal. Unfortunately during this pandemic, she was in the essential worker group.
My mother worked on a Sunday and was off Monday. Over night she became a different person. She could barely stay up, let alone walk around. When she was up she was super confused and barely spoke to us. Barely acknowledged us. Which scared the lights out of us.
The morning of Tuesday, we knew we had to get her help. The person in front of us was a shell of the person we knew a few days before. We would’ve never assumed it was covid related. My father found her trying to drink cough medicine without taking off the cap.
It took days for her health to deteriorate. Multiple conversations with different doctors not knowing what was wrong with her. She was unable to get up and stay up on her own. She was barely waking up. Barely speaking. Just the overall feeling of dread.
After many exams later, it’s figured out she has pneumonia and a infection in her brain.. all caused by the virus... which is something we haven’t heard of. A friend of mine did share the article on the first post of this thread. Apparently it was becoming more common.
Only a few days ago did we hear more positive news. She didn’t need to be on a respirator, however her other symptoms were still there. There was conversations of speech therapy and helping her to walk again. It’s been two weeks since I was able to see or speak to my mother.
Today was that day. The fact this virus was able to break a 54 year old woman, but not in the way we heard on the news is the more eerie part of all this. We we did not expect or know how to handle all of this.
