More on sack lunches, a thread:

There's always a line when we roll out the lunches at 11. Cheeseburgers and chicken noodle soup today, pb&j for the few kids who aren’t sick of that yet. Once lunch is served we get to work putting together the day’s pantry box distributions. 1/8
This is a quieter, less harried time of day, and feels easier to control. Portioning the beans is my favorite, something I would have found immense joy in as a child. Such sonic and tactile pleasure in the whir-click of dried beans tumbling into a paper sack. 2/8
I can look out through the window and wave at the people picking up lunches. Every day a group of regular sack lunchers eat in a clump along the edge of the planter where they argue loudly and make a scene and I really wish the lunch was enough to quell their restlessness... 3/8
...but it’s not. When they are done they throw away their paper sacks and juice boxes in the city trash cans and move their kerfuffle somewhere else. It strikes me that though they don’t always act as I wish they would, that small act of citizenry is something. 4/8
The proper disposal of trash is a noteworthy act of community in itself. I am filling boxes with vegetables and cheese, milk and bread, sneaking in little boxes of Lucky Charms for kids while Lyle Lovett is on the stereo covering Townes van Zandt 5/8
and I’m thinking about community and what that looks like now, and how that song moved from one set of lungs to another and lost nothing for its travels. 6/8
This is the way community works for us right now, financing pantry boxes and sack lunches with donations made from neighbors who trust us to play the cover for other neighbors. Every dollar that has come in includes an unwritten copyright permission: 7/8
Here, I wrote this song, I trust you to play it well. I’m thankful for these songs to play, trying to stay in tune. Keeping the show going as best we can, doing as much as we can for as long as we can. 8/8
