So I'm just getting around to watching yesterday's White House Press Briefing and the only thing I know about it from reading Twitter is that Trump threw a big tantrum anf claimed he has "ultimate authority,"
I'm only 40 minutes into this thing but the President's premise was that the media has been dishonest in the way they have reported the White House's response to COVID19, and this has clearly been reiterated in the way the media continues to report on this. Shameful!
One highlight up front was Dr. Fauci scolded the press for misrepresenting his statements and then praised Trump for acting upon all of his advice swiftly and decisively.

One journalist asked him if he was being forced to make that statement and he shot that down immediately.
Later, Trump played a series of clips of governors and mayors praising the federal government's response in assisting them with medical staff and ventilators. The media was not happy to have their narrative undermined so one "journalist" implied it was a campaign commercial. Sad!
Then we get to the question about Trump's "authority."

In context , the journalist was asking if Trump could force states to lift their #StayHome orders.

Governors have claimed he cannot do that but Trump claims he can.

I ♄ federalism but there's something else worth noting.
In 1957, President Eisenhower (R) ordered US Military to Little Rock, AR to force the opening of Central High School for 9 black students because Governor Faubus (D) closed the public schools to push back against integration.

Who had the ultimate authority in that case?
My point is that it's my preference that mayors and governors move quickly to lift their #StayHome orders because a showdown with the president is a losing strategy. Stand up for federalism and set aside partisanship.
My other point is that folks who are criticising Trump for claiming he has "ultimate authority" are basically arguing against Eisenhower's authority to integrate schools in Arkansas and other southern states during the Jim Crow era.

Seriously embarrassing!!
