Hospitalists can play a vital role in the #PPE conservation effort with their daily decisions during this #COVID19 pandemic and beyond. Learn more in the @JHospitalMed article by @JoThomson, @FScaggsHuang, Josh Schaffzin, and me. #GetmePPE http://bit.ly/34sMjR4 ">https://bit.ly/34sMjR4&q...
How are your hospitals conserving #PPE? Hospitals around the US have proposed and implemented both routine and innovative protocols to conserve PPE during #COVID19.
These changes may still miss opportunities to improve the value of #PPE: #HighValueCare with PPE requires a system designed so that healthcare workers use PPE when they need it, and do not use PPE when not indicated. #COVID19 #safelydoingless @Safelydoingless
Why is that? Using #PPE when it is not needed deemphasizes the value of other preventative precautions (e.g., handwashing), wastes supply, and may even harm patients. #COVID19
Clinicians should review #PPE orders daily during rounds as they would lab orders and discontinue unneeded ones. We can team up with nurse colleagues to identify discontinuation opportunities. #COVID19
Looking for bigger value? Healthcare systems should invest in redesigning how we order #PPE at the highest level. What can your hospital do to redesign during and after #COVID19? @JHospitalMed @JoThomson @FeliciaScaggs @CincyPHMFellows
