We used augmented reality to show what social distancing guidelines look like in real life: at the grocery store, on a sidewalk, anywhere you might go. You can try too with a recent iOS device in the NYTimes app. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/04/14/science/coronavirus-transmission-cough-6-feet-ar-ul.html

The best way to stop the spread of the coronavirus is to stay home. But if you must go out, it's important to keep your distance — and even staying 6 feet away from others may not be enough. This simulation shows what happens when a person coughs indoors.

The CDC says staying at least 6 feet from others can help avoid coming into contact with the respiratory droplets from a person’s cough, sneeze or breath.

But the droplets can travel farther, the simulation shows — and smaller ones can stay suspended in the air.

Researchers at MIT studying coughs and sneezes observed particles from a cough traveling as far as 16 feet and those from a sneeze traveling as far as 26 feet.

Look at the full simulation to show how far respiratory droplets can spread. If you do need to leave home, you should wear a mask — and be sure to keep your distance.
