Us: “You don’t need to confess your sins to be forgiven.”

What people claim we say: “You don’t need to repent!”

We are not forgiven because of our confession, but because God has chosen to forgive us! This is an important distinction to make...
"In Him we have... the forgiveness of sins, ACCORDING TO THE RICHES OF HIS GRACE"
-Eph 1:7
Our forgiveness is based on HIS grace, which isn’t dependent on our behaviour. I talk to Christians all the time who think they’re not currently forgiven???
That until they confess every little sin they’ve committed, God won’t forgive them. Others think if they aren’t able to forgive others, God won’t forgive them (Matt 6:14-15). But they’ve failed to miss how things work in the new covenant! In the old cov, it was conditional...
In order for God to do xyz, you must do abc first. But in the new, there are no conditions! It’s about what God has done! We are the recipients who get to respond. How does this work with forgiveness?
"..forgiving one another, even as God in Christ FORGAVE you."
-Eph 4:32
"...even as Christ FORGAVE you, so you also must do."
-Colossians 3:13
"...your sins ARE FORGIVEN you for His name’s sake."
-I John 2:12
See the difference? See the tense? It’s in the past now! We have BEEN forgiven. Now we have a different reason to forgive others.
Notice how I haven’t addressed the word “repent” yet. This word gets used synonymously with confession, but it shouldn’t be. See the difference between the English and original Greek definitions? The word in the Greek (metanoia) actually means “to change your mind”.
Because people don’t make this distinction, they claim we don’t “preach repentance” (as if that’s part of preaching Christ and Him crucified) or say that nobody needs to repent. This is false! We tell people to repent all the time! We need to change the way we think about God!
Some of us think God is against us and need to repent (because He’s for us). We think He’s quick to anger and slow to love and need to repent (because it’s the opposite). You get my point. Now the only verse that seems to suggest we need to confess for forgiveness is I John 1:9..
Which is actually John addressing the gnostic heretics who believed they were sinless and didn’t need the blood (which I won’t go into on here, but I’ll post a link). Our forgiveness isn’t dependent on how good our memory is! It’s on His grace! Let this truth set you free!
