By the end of this month, the staff of @virginianpilot will be moving out of our historic downtown Norfolk headquarters.
Since 1937, generations of Pilot journalists have created the âdaily miracleâ from 150 Brambleton.

We havenât worked in our offices for some time because of the coronavirus pandemic. I wonât get the chance to be in the building too many more times.
I imagine we would have had a going away event. Thatâs not really possible right now.

The Pilotâs history dates to the end of the Civil War. The newspaper has won 3 Pulitzer Prizes. They decorate the walls.
Frank Batten is revered at The Pilot as a former publisher who founded @weatherchannel and created a media empire in Norfolk.
This is our 2nd floor newsroom. Itâs been redesigned many times since the 30s. Norfolkâs afternoon paper once shared this space.
One of the spots I love most at The Pilot is our morgue â the archives. It was created in the late 1930s and modeled after the archives at the @baltimoresun.
Itâs away from the newsroom. Very quiet. And thereâs a slight musty smell.
Itâs not as its best - packed up to move.

Now-empty racks of card shelves in the library.
This space originally was used for locker rooms for pressman, per @JakonHays.

Only 4 U.S. newspapers have been named the âworldâs best designedâ by @SND since 2000. The Virginian-Pilot was one of them and weâve been very proud of our world-class designers and that legacy.
The walls are decorated with brilliant art.

This is a time capsule from 1990. @JakonHays pulled it out of a wall on the first floor. It& #39;s due to be opened in 2065.
Thatâs it. There are so many other places in this building that are odd or strange or cool.
Iâll miss you, you old leaky building.
I hope Pilot alumni will share their memories of Brambleton.
