There seems to be a lot of confusion about what's going on with the Navy and their COVID-19 cases.
Couple of points of clarification:
1. There are 296 ships in the Navy's battle force.
2. At any point in time about 1/3 of them are underway either on their own or parts of larger formations.
3. As of Monday there were 89 ships underway.
4. Throughout the pandemic there have been cases of COVID-19 reported on several non-deployed ships in San Diego. Many of the cases were centered around USS Boxer and a surface warfare training center on the pier.
5. When a ship is at the pier not underway it's like going to your regular joe job. You park, walk on the ship do some stuff, head to the NEX for lunch, clock out go home.
6. There was a pretty wide spread in San Diego before PACFLEET stopped naming which crews of which ships were infected and just provided totals.
7. Cases of COVID-19 were discovered on members of the crew assigned to carriers Reagan, Vinson and Nimitz.
8. Reagan and Vinson are in maintenance periods and a long way away from being underway.
8a. Reagan is a weird case since it's always 'deployed' under special rules but still has a significant annual repair period in which it takes a bunch of weeks off to get wrenched on.
9. The only positive case of a sailor ASSIGNED to Nimitz was a sailor on leave who was at least an entire state away from where the ship was berthed in Bremerton, Wash.
10. Reagan, Nimitz and Vinson. Not deployed.
11. #GenMilley said there were no cases on the 90 or so ships underway other than the TR.
12. Nimitz will be leaving in the next few days to finish training, with no positive cases aboard the carrier though there's a member of the crew with COVID-19 who is, again, at least a state away from the ship.
13. What is happening with TR is singular and dramatic and shows how this virus can make combat ineffective a deployed capital ship for weeks as easily as any other weapon.
To wrap up: There's a major difference between an outbreak on a ship at the pier with access to external medical care like Vinson or Reagan or Nimitz with no military obligation and a deployed ship hundreds of miles from shore like TR that is counted on for national tasking.
