Thanks @RCSEd for last night's webinar on #COVID19 and Surgical Trainees - Your Questions Answered" https://www.rcsed.ac.uk/professional-support-development-resources/learning-resources/webinars/covid-19/covid-19-and-surgical-trainees-your-questions-answered

College priorities:
- Support trainees’ clinically & personally
- Distribution of PPE

Summary below, though 24h late!
2/n
Issues related to delivery of training:
- Rotations: paused until August to promote team structure & reduce need for induction. Will R/V August rotation & plan for those OOP to resume training too (with induction). OOP-R may need extra time to finalise research.
3/n
- Redeployment: cessation of elective operating->surgical workforce available for redeployment within competence (VOLUNTARY). Must be approved by deanery & director of MedEd. Need induction, supervision & PPE. Continue WBAs/ record experiences for consideration at ARCP
4/n
- Recruitment: No interviews, MDRS decision for substantive recruitment to continue using self- assessment. Consistent across specialties.
5/n
- Reviews: ARCP with fewer panelists & can award “Outcome 10” (satisfactory outcome but lack evidence due to COVID eg exam/course/competency). CCT not awarded unless specific requirements obtained. Indicative numbers are not absolute numbers.
6/n
Challenges felt by trainee committee:
- Exams: cancellation puts pressure on trainees rearranging schedules & training. Will R/V link between part 1 & part 2 exit exams for those in-between sittings
7/n
- Ethics: Work in own limitations but outside comfort zone
- ARCP: 1st duty to pts. Balance excellence in clinical service & progression
-Physical health:PPE- if concerned raise it! look after self to look after pts. Minimise risk to others (family & pts) by prioritising self
8/n
- Psych health just as important: anti-bullying, rest, annual leave (some trusts carrying over A/L or financial reimbursement, difficulty considering how to reallocate A/L if moving between trusts…trainers/rota co-ordinators to be aware of potential for burnout)
9/n
- Financial health: D/W supervisors & get help if needed
- Uncertainty: anticipate that many things will change, accept flexibility, trust the well-intentioned planning going on behind scenes- engage in discussion
- Childcare: ask if need help!

Issues delivering training:
- Regulated by GMC
- Record where redeployed to & experiences gained -important at ARCP
- D/W AES & TPD concerns re: local training
- New curricula won’t occur until GMC approved it- currently slowed but still aim for August roll-out e.g. in ENT
