how do i help my mom understand that Jesus was a leftist and she always has been too
almost every aspect of our life was mutual aid/barter! my parents have generally been the most caring ppl i know and have built relationships around helping each other. theyve become more and more frustrated with larger scale system such as churches we were part of
my mom pulled my sis out of 1st grade bc she had a bad teacher and my mom was experienced in early childhood education. decided she didnt trust the public school system to give my sis an education and committed to homeschooling all 3 of her kids at the time, now the other 3 too
she found homeschool coops. where all families paid a small fee for building space, tasks were shared, and classes were offered based on ability of parents involved: drawing, science, math, english, sewing, sign language etc etc etc
she taught preschool art as her share. my teachers were usually my friends parents. chem taught by a pharmacist, sign language by a woman who went deaf and learned, gov by a local chairman. i took at least 6yrs of sewing/crocheting/knitting classes from local crafters!
our whole house was renovated bc of barter. my dad self taught himself hella tech stuff in the 90s/00s. as a teen he started making websites for friends in exchange for their help around our house. they got more business, we got a house that was better to live in
our hardwood floors were done by our neighbor in exchange for a website, our basement was finished by a church friend who was a retired construction worker in exchange for a website for his leather works. car repairs etc often happened this way, still do!
even my dance classes were partially paid for by my babysitting, helping with costumes/sets or assistant teaching. we didnt have a ton of money so we found ways to do things in exchange for ppl. its always been a good way to live!
this thread already way longer than i intended it to be. oops! but this went beyond those things. it was the clothes we always passed around, the swapping of garden goods, our farmer friends giving us good prices for whatever we had to offer to them.
its just so strange to see the ppl i know engage in this kind of living and community building not understand they are posing against the things at the core of their ways of life!
a lot of ppl in these communities are right leaning bc they dont understand the core of leftist ideas. theyve been raised christian and those misunderstanding of things like bodily autonomy, sex, gender, even just pleasure stand in the way of them seeing parallels to their lives
rly honestly truly if i wasnt taught guilt and shame for my very being in these circles, often in such small ways, they formed my way of thinking and my beliefs that community is what truly matters and that rn those who work hardest get the least
