Obama didn’t make South Carolina voters vote for Biden, he didn’t make voters vote for Biden on Super Tuesday, and he didn’t suspend Sanders’ campaign. Younger voters chose not to physically vote for Sanders and thought their support on social media would be good enough. https://twitter.com/anakasparian/status/1250053422528618496
People in Twitter bubbles reduce Obama to a doddering failure who opened the door for Trump, disregarding the fact that Obama has been and still is a wildly popular former president whose administration was seen as a success, regardless of its flaws, outside of Twitter.
The claim that Obama and his perceived failures is the reason we have Trump is rooted in the fact that a man with real accomplishments is seen as inferior to a man with virtually none. As per usual, black people have to perform perfectly while mediocrity is seen as success.
Obama intentionally did not endorse anyone up to this point because he is fully aware that his endorsement carries a lot of weight; he isn’t stupid. If Bernie was the one who won, Obama would have thrown his full support behind him regardless of what some progressives think.
Sanders didn’t lose the south because of rigging or the DNC. He lost because, as I’ve repeated a billion times, he and other progressives in his circle didn’t care much to genuinely reach out to them and build coalitions in the south.
A hint: you won’t be able to tell older black voters that a white dude who played second fiddle to a black man for eight years while doing nothing to undermine him is actually a secret racist waiting to implement the same policies as Trump.
Saying things like “Biden worked with segregationists” rings hollow to voters who have lived through segregation and have representatives, including reps of color, who also had to work with segregationists to pass laws.
Another thing progressives tend to forget is that the so-called “establishment” includes Congress members who have been working their asses off for years to fight for their communities and these people have strong, legit ties to their communities.
If you think voters in Georgia don’t feel slighted when you go after a man like John Lewis because you personally think he’s a sellout just because he didn’t support your guy, then you’re unaware about how people feel about politicians who are close to them.
I personally consider myself a progressive. Biden wasn’t my first choice, second choice, or hell not even my fifth choice. But despite me thinking he’s more moderate than I’d like, I don’t doubt the fact that he is capable of being pushed, unlike Trump.
Progressives can work to push Biden left on plenty of issues. Pushing Trump left is impossible—and claiming that he’s left of Democrats just because of some vague lip service to better healthcare just makes it sound like you want Dems to fail.
