This is a constant battle for Nigerian creatives. We don’t make content for mainstream consumption, thank you. We are not voice artists or voice over “Pros” and we are not required to speak to you in a TransAtlantic accent. We are our selves and that’s what makes youtube Youtube.

Most importantly that video was not an ad. I cringe at how completely ignorant a lot of people are. Tayo has an entire section dedicated to showing real estate in different countries on his channel. He is not advertising. His audience loves these type of videos.

They request for them and they bring in views, period. He even makes comparison videos. There are videos where he shows what $1 million can get you in different African countries.

I understand thinking and expressing that the property isn’t worth a million dollars. But criticizing another person because they sound just like you? Madness. We have a huge complex when it comes to accents in this country and it is pathetic.

We hate it when people sound too foreign (they grew up here and they sound like that? No.) but we also hate it when anyone with a huge following sounds like the average Nigerian. Like how dare you speak to a large audience when you sound just like me?

Tayo is an amazing videographer and his channel is growing rapidly. His videography, colour grading, video editing, drone shots are INSANE. Most of his views (like you would see with most Nigerian youtubers) aren’t even coming from Nigerians and they understand him just fine.

But Nigerians? who know nothing about him? are on here not praising the quality of that video, they did not remark on how great the drone shots were, they did not complement his editing, they are insulting and criticizing his accent.
