To begin with, Niall has stated in different interviews that his album has a narrative of a relationship with different points of view besides his own. The order of those songs has a meaning that will guide us through the story.
This thread has no intention of making conspiracy theories about Niall's private life. I just want to analyze the lyrics of his songs because I think that is a story in which we can all see ourselves identified.
Lastly I want to address: English isn’t my first language so please keep that in mind if I make any grammar mistakes.

This song comes right before black and white for a reason. Niall relates that how he’s rushing things up and he knows that if he continues to do so, everything will be over.

He’s like: don’t f*ck it up, Niall.
Also I love how he personifies patience like an old friend, it feels like he’s actually talking to God to help him to have patience.

This song is really powerful. It’s one of my favorites.
Look how this is a breaking point.
Look how he’s having a conversation with himself. (I mean, his patience lives inside his head).
Look how he’s trying to KNOW himself (keep this in mind, it will help us later).

This song just talks for itself.
Niall has spoken of the main idea of it:
This gives us some powerful advice.

-You need to learn how to love and know yourself.
-You need to go through a heartbreak to learn that true love does not drive you out of control but brings you peace.
-Just don’t rush things up.
This song has no meaning other than to show niall's vulnerability and how complex people are.
Why complex? Because we’ve been there.

For example: you know that you need to exercise and eat healthy but you just don’t do it. You know that you need to study but you are just too lazy to do so.
He’s telling us how he knows he’s rushing things up and he wants to change..

...but he can’t.
What happens when you love someone without knowing them well?

Problems.

jealously, toxic behavior, “you were not like that”...

How I interpreted was that all the verses are Niall’s thoughts about that girl she met at the bar, and that girl thoughts are the choruses.
Why?

Well, first we have that all the verses he’s mentioning a girl.

Also when he says “she’s not my baby” I believe he’s referring to now his ex, meaning that he still thinks of her.

I think in that line he gives us a clue that they have already broke up.

This revenge and jealousy just makes Niall feels regretful.

As I said, we as humans, are really complex.
My general thoughts of this song are:

What I noticed with the chorus is that the only time Niall literally said that he was in love with her was back in “Black and white” where he said “I promise that I love you for the rest of my life”...

It also took me back to a book I read years ago called “Tu rastro de sangre en la nieve” by Gabriel García Márquez.

This short story talks about a young couple who married and had a honey moon traveling around Europe, but suddenly Nina, (the protagonist) pricked herself with the thorn of a rose.

She started to bleed out little by little, like it was nothing. Suddenly, after days in a hospital, Nina died.

What I take from this book it’s how fast and passionate their love was. They got married so soon and so young, they were so lovable but at the end of the day, they got separated for a tiny hole on Nina’s fingertip.
