For the first time in human history, more than half the world's population lives in urban areas, a number that is only projected to grow. With #urbanization comes an increase in impervious surface area, reducing infiltration and disrupting the natural hydrologic cycle. (A thread)
We see increases in runoff volumes and increased transport of pollutants/sediment to our surface waters. It's important that we help the general public understand that in most cities in Iowa #stormwater drains directly to our streams and rivers and is not treated.
Here are 2 stormwater examples from my study neighborhoods. A heavy rainfall generated a significant amount of sediment that is funneled directly into a storm drain, and we see water pollution even in winter as snowmelt from a commercial parking lot carries with it an oil slick.
