HOW APPLE HAS MADE PEOPLE 'PROUD!'

And why this important to you, your brand and your business.

You see it almost every time:

People making comparisons between the iPhone and android.

In fact, not just comparisons, but outright ridicule.

iPhone users feel superior.
You shouldn't blame them.

You should applaud Apple.

They have achieved something every brand should aim for.

Apple has always pushed a message, much more than their product.

And that message has always been about the power of individualism.

The power of uniqueness
Apple pushes the message that all their users are cool, crazy and independent.

And this should be the goal of every brand.

As much as possible, you should not sell product.

Sell a movement!

Let's look at some classic Apple ads and see how they have done this.
1. Think Different- To the crazy ones.

Apple cleverly made a distinction in describing their customers.

They are crazy and not your everyday, regular Joe.

Hate them, or love them, but you can't ignore them because their 'madness' is clear and obvious.
2. 1984 Macintosh!

This was an adaptation of a popular novel by the title 1984, which showed the effect of war, government control and manipulation.

Notice how the people seating are like zombies until macintosh comes to the rescue.
3. Apple Lemmings Commercial.

Almost like the 1984 commercial. This one aired one year after.

The idea?

"No dey follow everybody, shine your eyes. Follow Apple!"

If you are still on android, you are on a long thing.

Beautiful ad.
4. Maiden IPod ad.

Notice what Apple did here.

You can be on your own and groove like you own the world.

No care.

Apple is saying be yourself, be crazy.
The same message runs in all their ads:

"Be yourself because there is no one else like you"

In all of these, there are two lessons we can learn and adapt in our business:

1. Sell a message.

Apples message is clear:

'You can unleash your YOU-ness with us!'
Be crazy, be free, enjoy your life to its full.

What problem does your product solve?

What message can you bring out of it?

Sell that message.

Is your message happiness? Control? Freedom? Confidence? Power?

Whatever it is, make it obvious and sell it.
2. Start a movement.

You see how excited people get when they get the apple iPhone.

They feel like they just got inducted into a special and unique cult.

They feel like they just upgraded their life.

Don't blame them.

Apple is pushing the movement and it is working.
If you can do this well, you will build a brand that people love.
