I've read DUNE, and I do rather like the Lynch film.
DUNE is frickin' weird. Ambitious, unique, weirdly cerebral, emotionally distant. It's more interested in the mechanics of its world than the emotions of its only-distantly-human characters.
Of COURSE it will bomb.

The book is so elaborate, and the universe so involved, it has a glossary of terms that I had to check frequently while reading. Will Denis Villeneuve hand our similar glosseries before the film?
I hope he does. I hope the film is so off-putting and elaborate that it requires extra reading. I hope critics and audiences are split. It will not necessarily be enjoyable - indeed it will likely be turgid and impenetrable - but it will be discussed a lot.
