Over the past two days, I did an informal survey of BC parents of students with special ed designations, asking what platform(s) their district is using for online learning. ^JB 1/5
I heard from parents from 23 of 60 (38%) public school districts. The most common platform is Microsoft Teams, which is being used in 9 of the districts. Three parents reported there’s “nothing so far” but have had phone contact w/ teachers. 2/5
Twelve parents said that their districts are using multiple platforms. Three of those parents had children in different classes in the same school, using different platforms. 3/5
The teachers/schools/districts choosing to use multiple platforms are putting an enormous workload on parents. This in itself may create a barrier and contribute to people choosing to end their learning for this school year. 4/5
As we move forward, I encourage districts to support using a unified platform. This will help parent adapt to online learning particularly when they have more than one child. It will also help with sharing resources and lesson plans, which will help with teacher workload too. 5/5
