God the Dune discourse is going to be a nightmare. The first book is a pretty standard white savior thing and then there are like 50 other books about how perhaps that was a bad idea, but everybody always wants to just adapt the first one!
Like surprise, the Bene Gesserit eugenics program is bad, actually. Hope you& #39;re willing to make 10 movies to get the point across, though!!
Yeah that seems possible, I just think the optics of the movie (which is all most people are gonna see) are gonna be real grist for the thinkpiece mill. https://twitter.com/CGettermann/status/1250092763481333762">https://twitter.com/CGetterma...
Like I am glad they cast the Fremen diversely! Zendaya as Chani is brilliant casting. I just feel like we are gonna have some Mhysa Moments.
lmaooo YES https://twitter.com/MatthewKJohnson/status/1250093879258472448">https://twitter.com/MatthewKJ...
I mean they have cast the Atreides household somewhat diversely as well, I think to head that off. But you can& #39;t really escape the core conceit that the Fremen are Bedouins and Paul is a European who becomes the Mahdi. https://twitter.com/keeltyc/status/1250093771611652096">https://twitter.com/keeltyc/s...
There are just a whole bunch of sequels that go into why anyone, but particularly an outsider, becoming the Mahdi is maybe not ideal.
I will say Oscar Isaac playing Timothee Chalamet& #39;s father in a series that is specifically obsessed with DNA inheritance is kind of hysterical. Like where did THAT go? Lady Jessica has those Bene Gesserit genes on LOCK.
A friend who doesn’t know the story asked me if Paul was adopted and I was like wow no he is extremely not adopted, that’s pretty central to the plot.
I find them (including the first one) to be conceptually fascinating but honestly very dry reads. I’d rather watch adaptations. But that’s just me personally! https://twitter.com/jekwrites/status/1250098701802102784?s=21">https://twitter.com/jekwrites... https://twitter.com/jekwrites/status/1250098701802102784">https://twitter.com/jekwrites...
