Hey #dnd dms. Telling your players the plan doesn't ruin the session. Last night I told my party of a no win. I told them it would look like a tpk on the surface but is actually a capture. And they came to the session safe and prepared. In on the joke.

They collectively made it look like they were dying, scared, concerned on stream and made the audiance worry to great effect. It was infectious and a delight. But also we were all safe. As they trusted me and I trusted them. And we weaved a beautiful story.

This is what player and DM cooperative story telling looks and feels like. This is how as a dm you can have the story you want to tell cake and eat it. This is what agency looks like for the dms and players. I am tired as heck, but proud.
