Anyways I will make a thread of 20 books I loved which may not be very popular but I think you should read. It's only fair I also talk about the ones I like, as always feel free to disagree or agree and also add your books to the thread. Writing this at 6pm
You can buy the books I will mention on Amazon which is my go to but if you are in Nigeria @Rovingheights really is your plug and they deliver nationwide. So let's do this shall we? Remember to share your thoughts and disagree/agree
Won the NLNG Prize but Nigerians are sleeping on this book, this is one of the saddest and most unusual love stories you will ever read. Who ever thought Hajia and Reza could be a couple? And that ending left me sad for days! See guys, buy this book.
After the disaster that was Bomboy Yewande brought it with this book. It will leave you in stitches but not enough to distract you from the themes of race, class, friendship and love. I am definitely Hortensia James and Hortensia James is me
I read this book four times and I dare say that Eghosa Imasuen brought it, if you attended a public university in Nigeria this novel will be so nostalgic for you. Character development is also superb, plot sustains tempo from start to finish
Masterpiece, took my breath away! This book will keep you glued to the pages with how fast paced it is, Furo is someone you know cos of how real he is. Lagos comes alive in Blackass, this is the Lagos Book.
For someone who is not a fan of magical realism, this book a pleasant surprise. Suyi did a fine work writing a brilliant story around Nigerian mythology and a demi god. I particularly liked it cos it was set in Lagos Island where I work, felt so good to recognize the streets.
If you like Badly behaved african women then you should pick this up! Ayodele experts navigates the shackles and expectations that hold women back through flawed characters, some of whom assert their agency and many who don't. You recognize all the women this book!
Chinelo Okparanta's brilliant novel Under the udala tree is often talked about but not a lot of people mention this fantastic collection of short stories. Grief, loss, abandonment, joy are some of the themes. Tip: A few characters are queer and America was my favourite story.
Another story centred around a badly behaved woman who is determined to do every thing a woman is not supposed to do. This book also forces us to have the conversation about precolonial slave trade as well as class/caste systems. Really genius work.
I know opinions are torn on this but it captivated me from start to finish, maybe because it is centred around a Trans character or maybe because many parts are set in Rivers state. It forced me to think about gender and sexual expression as I know it, I honestly recommend
I will be honest and say that I am biased towards the book because it is set in Portharcourt but I honestly loved it. It talks about a family dealing with loss, a loss that is not final. A missing loved on is one of the worst things you will experience! This is a good book
Follows the characteristic Sefi style of wit and charm with major political events as the backdrop of the story. You will love this one, my only anger is that Remi and Frances didn't hook and I am sure I am not the only one who felt their sexual chemistry 😑😑😑
If you need something light and breezy this is it, you will laugh and laugh and laugh till your gums ache. Follows the lives of these fabulous SA women as they navigate sex, careers, men and life in general. PS: The book is 300 times better than the movie
Grab a box of tissues for this one, no spoilers but I was not prepared for the ending. Uzodinma brought it with Beasts of No Nation (The book is better by the way) but he outdid himself with this one. You will go from rage to despair to anger to disappointment in this book.
Another light but the central character Morayo Da-Silva is easily one of the most remarkable characters you will read. Love, family ageing and a loss of independence are a few themes explored. You will love it! I started arranging my bookshelf like the character
Fast paced in a way that will shock you, the plot picks up from the first page and holds through out! Crime fiction and medical mystery rolled into one, see buy this book and thank me later.
Coming of age story like no other, this book bravely takes on themes we would rather avoid, from sex to pedophilia. Chronicles a woman's journey to her full self with many steps on the way, I absolutely loved it.
