Here is a short thread that I hope shines a light on what Berners should do now that Bernie has suspended his campaign and endorsed Joe Biden. Firstly, while its a Hail Mary, every Berner living in a state that has not yet held its primary or caucus 1/15
should cast their ballot for Bernie. Biden is likely to win, but it still pays to cast that ballot as Biden is the shakiest of candidates and lighting might strike. If Bernie ends up with the most delegates, it would be hard to deny him the nomination. 2/15
But looking to the general election there are five options for you, and let's take a look at them: (1) Stay Home and don't vote; (2) Vote for Biden; (3) Write-in Sanders; (4) Leave the POTUS line blank and vote only down ballot; and (5) Vote third party. 3/15
Stay home/not voting is the worst option. This is only for people ready to totally abandon electoral politics. Otherwise, it's the worst way to express displeasure with the choices given to us by the two major parties as a non-vote can be misconstrued as apathy or weakness. 4/15
Voting for Biden sends a message to the DNC that their cheating tactics paid off. You will be giving them the payoff they sought to achieve but don't deserve. This option is especially inexcusable if you live in a Deep Blue or Deep Red state where your vote is unlikely to 5/15
determine the outcome anyway. If you live in a swing state, and given that Trump is an absolute monster, a vote for Biden is a little more understandable. 6/15
Writing in Bernie Sanders is probably the second worst choice behind staying home. Assuming that Justin Amash does not enter the campaign and run for president as an independent, Bernie stands virtually no chance of being elected through a write in campaign. 7/15
Your vote may make you feel good but will accomplish virtually nothing as Bernie's political career appears to be coming to an end and he won't run again in 2024. 8/15
Leaving the POTUS line blank and voting down ballot is the second best way to communicate your displeasure with the choices given to you by the two major parties. If 100M ballots are cast and only 90M of them contain a POTUS vote, you're message will be received. 9/15
But the ONLY WAY the Democrats EVER will stop taking the Left for granted is for the Left to empower a third party and for that party to obtain enough votes to SCARE THE SH*T OUT OF THEM. That happens when a third party gets 5% of the vote and earns federal matching funds. 10/15
If you live in either a Deep Blue or Deep Red state, its really a no-brainer that this is what you should do. And IMO, the Green Party is the best and most natural vehicle for this as both persons presently vying for the Green Party nomination support #M4A #GND #FreeCollege 11/15
#EndCollegeDebt #FederalJobsGuaratee and a host of other very progressive public policy positions. 12/15
Now concerns have been voiced about voting Green Party. The argument against it, if I have it right, is that Howie Hawkins is the odds-on favorite to win the Green Party nomination, and that he unfortunately has expressed some views that have him now viewed as a Russiagater 13/15
notwithstanding his otherwise very progressive platform. I agree this is an unfortunate position. But regardless of whether LaRiva or Hawkins wins the GP nomination, it really shouldn't affect your decision to vote for the Green Party nominee. here's why: 14/15
The GP nominee has virtually no chance of winning. They're running just to reach the matching funds plateau. Their policy positions don't matter. If you want to make your vote count the most, vote strategically for the GP candidate. You'll get the most bang for your ballot. 15/15
