Back in 2017, I was ASP (UT) in Mardan when Mashal khan was brutally lynched in Abdul Wali khan University Mardan. I interrogated all the arrested accused including Imran who shot Mashal khan. This thread contains few of my observations.
1. Mashal was a bright student.
He had a thirst for knowledge. He was a freethinker and used to question inexplicalble phenomena and religious dogmas like every other curious mind but was loud in raising these questions. He was an admirer of the revolutionaries. His thoughts were evolving like every other boy.
All the propaganda regarding foreign funding to Mashal is rubbish and not grounded in facts.
2. Universities are considered as a budding ground of new ideas and pave way for growth of national conscience. Students are taught to be curious and intrigued to learn new concepts.
However, our universities don not provide an environment for debate and exchange of ideas. Question and curiousity, which serve as the foundation of learning are condemned and result in inertia. Mashal tried to break it without knowing the consequences. He paid the price.
3. During the course of investigation, I asked every accused that what blasphemous comment was made by Mashal and to my surprise no one had knowledge. It was only hearsay. No one bothered to verify. This is what happens when someone accuses other of blasphemy.
People do not verify or give a chance to another person. It is one of the reasons many a hapless soul are languishing in jails, only because of an allegation.
4. It is such a sensitive issue that your close friends can turn into bloodthirsty foes. Many who tortured Mashal were...
..his friends.
5. Imran who shot Mashal was an extremely poor boy who lived hand to mouth. He barely had money to pay his tution fee. He often slept without taking food. He was simple and honest boy. He never had done any wrong prioir to it. He also lamented that Mashal was ...
.. lynched by the mob. He had not participated in it.
So the question arises what made him kill Mashal?
To me, it was bigotry, hatred and fundamentalist ideas inculcated in his mind from school days to university class.
Imarn is also a victim, awaiting death in a cell and that too happily.
Who is responsible?
I'm leaving this question to all of you.
