I AM LIVID: I need all medical professionals to read this take written by Goldfarb, MD former dean of Penn.

this is a thread response because honestly: I am speechless, angry, and disappointed. I am also very sad to read this.

In it, Goldfarb actually argues med schools should stop teaching about racism, food insecurities and instead be more expert virologists.

Legitimately, when a majority of patients dying in this pandemic are black the former dean of med school at penn argues we should not address
He pokes fun at those med students lending a helping hand of service. Activities like @MNcovidsitters, activities like what @pedsmd2b & @traependergrast started in their communities.
Apparently, even though residents are dying around us and we are watching people who don’t have access to food struggle in this pandemic, we shouldn’t be learning about that.
It would be one thing if this was just one poor take but Dr. Goldfarb has had this rhetoric before and now in the middle of a pAndemic he is doubling down.

So I just wanna say some personal words to you Dr. Goldfarb: you sir, are WRONG.

I can be a badass immunologist AND social justice warrior. I can be a woman in science AND a great physicians AND care about food insecurities. I CAN help my patients get access to Gov services.
Dr. Goldfarb, I am so sorry that you don’t feel that MedEd should address health inequities and that you would prefer physicians “stay in their lane” and close our eyes to injustice.

Inequities that developed, in part, from admin of med schools batting eye at them for years.
NOT ANY MORE SIR. This has gone on long enough and I am passionate about kiddos that grew up in farms that I grew up inZz passionate about racism. I will be a physician that does both and MedEd is failing us if we don’t.
Thank you to those in MedEd that challenge these archaic viewpoints. If we don’t change we will continue to harm.
Oh this also brings me back to one of my major pet peeves: how many people still don’t consider research on SDOH to be “science”. It’s disrespectful and a very condescending take.

Research = science
Researching racism = science
Researching food deserts = science
