If you are angry with the migrant workers who gathered in hundreds at Bandra Station today, you're part of the problem.
The lockdown was supposed to end today. Although the State government had confirmed an extension, there were hopes there some way would be arranged for the migrant workers stranded in urban cities to return home.
Can you imagine the helplessness that got the migrant workers to the station today? Can you imagine the hope?
We can send dozens of Air India flights to bring back our citizens & also to send foreign nationals back to their countries but can't arrange adequate transport for migrants stuck in India?
Food and shelter is being provided to some of the migrants but not all, not everyday. It's fear that drives people, and fear that brought them to the station today. There is no guarantee of a secure tomorrow.
Their hunger, poverty, and deaths will just be collateral damage -a few editorials and debates before we move on .
Mismanagement is an uncomfortable culprit and so, we point fingers at the vulnerable, instead of holding our ministers responsible.
The Union and State could have prevented this from happening, had they planned things better and also co-ordinated.
And no, lathi charge is never an acceptable solution for anything.
So if you're one of those sitting in your three bedroom home angry with the migrant workers for what happened today, wondering 'what is wrong with these people', please know that you are reeking of privilege and apathy, and also that you're a piece of shit.
P.S - Please understand that not everyone has access to a television where they can watch the prime minister once again forget to find a solution to their problems. Our quick access to information is ALSO a privilege
