So yesterday I did my first #infolit class via Zoom during #COVID19. It went OK, but given the circumstances, that's good enough. If like me, you're still struggling with thinking through how to do a class in this setting, here was my approach 1/4
I started by designing realistic learning outcomes, then utilized the "mini-lesson" framework to build specific content to guide students towards achieving each outcome. S/o to @K_M_Klipfel and @kmaforester for this idea. More on mini-lessons here: https://learn.cli.org/best-practices/reading-workshop/instruction/mini-lesson
This wasn't all that different then how I design in-person classes; the difference was when designing engagement. How do you have discussions and practice time in Zoom? I ended each mini-lesson with questions that encouraged students to reflect on the main concepts we discussed
Sitting in silence waiting for students to type their responses to questions felt awkward, but no more awkward than standing at the front of the room waiting for someone to raise their hand. In the end, it was a fun learning experience. How's online learning working for you? 4/4
