I& #39;ve been thinking about why our society worships money, worships the rich. I think we& #39;re propagandized from birth. Richer is better. Wealthy people are superior. That& #39;s part of it. "You can never be too rich or too thin," But also, society makes sure there are poor people. Why?
Because if you& #39;re not always working, always trying to have more, you might be one of them. And they are lesser beings, the propaganda tells us. Trying to get something for nothing. Never mind what stops them. Never mind reality. If you forget the rules you might be one of them.
The thing is, more and more people are becoming "one of them" and fewer and fewer are going in the other direction. My father has recently shown me examples of people getting new wealth. Like this tiny fraction means something compared to the massive number getting poorer.
I hope -- because I& #39;m generally a hopeful person -- that this pandemic will shine a light on the disparities and the reality that there is almost no upward mobility. It& #39;s a lottery chance, really. Even less (has someone done the maths?) And that we& #39;ll do something about it.
My fear is that we won& #39;t do anything about it. It will get worse and worse and by the time the Capitalism Cultists wake up to the fact that they will never be anything but desperate, there won& #39;t be any going back. I fervently hope the waking up is happening right now.
