Tweeps have asked that I clarify my strident and vocal opposition to #ArlingtonMA's ongoing #streetsweeping plan during the #COVID19 #pandemic. Here's my thread: https://twitter.com/arlingtonmagov/status/1246819918164746243
#ArlingtonMA's #COVID19 cases as of March 17 = 5; as of yesterday, April 13, confirmed cases were = 89 w/ at least 2 dead (as reported to @ArlingtonHHS).
#COVID19 cases at @SunriseSrLiving in the #ArlingtonMA Heights and Park Ave. Health Center are increasing - as they are in many MA longterm facilities. https://www.nepr.net/post/massachusetts-ramps-testing-get-ahead-covid-19-care-facilities#stream/0
#COVID19 is present and growing in our #ArlingtonMA community. As @MassGovernor said, #Massachusetts is in a #coronavirus surge with the peak hitting around April 20. https://www.wbur.org/commonhealth/2020/04/10/surge-boston-hospitals-patients
So what does all this have to do with #streetsweeping? Glad you asked. Well, we know that:
* #COVID19 is in #ArlingtonMA
* cases are rising
* cases will peak around 04/20
* you are more likely to "catch" #coronavirus" thru the air than from surfaces https://hub.jhu.edu/2020/03/20/sars-cov-2-survive-on-surfaces/

There's a difference between #streetsweeping and #streetcleaning. It doesn't seem like the US is doing any #COVID19 disinfecting/cleaning of streets of the kind we see in #SouthKorea, #Italy, #Mexico and other countries. https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/gabrielsanchez/coronavirus-world-sanitizing-covid-19-pandemic
But other US cities are postponing their #streetsweeping service out of #COVID19 concerns - due to infection, staffing, and #publichealth concerns. #ArlingtonMA https://chicago.suntimes.com/2020/3/26/21194767/coronavirus-covoid-19-pandemic-chicago-social-distancing-lakefront-suntimes-editorial
#ArlingtonMA's @arlingtonmagov is not postponing the #streetsweeping program during peak #COVID19.

There are valid reasons for #streetsweeping #ArlingtonMA mainly to keep catch basins clear to prevent flooding issues during heavy rains.
But is community-wide #streetsweeping the best idea right now in the middle of a #COVID19 #pandemic surge? Is it the best use of and safe for our #ArlingtonMA #publicworks staff?
Perhaps @arlingtonmagova could delay #ArlingtonMA's #streetsweeping or implement a Plan B (like to address flooding concerns) until the surge is over on or about April 20 (seriously, 6 days from now). https://www.mass.gov/info-details/covid-19-cases-quarantine-and-monitoring
On the days that your #ArlingtonMA #streetsweeping is scheduled, here are some tips to minimize potential #COVID19 exposure:
* close doors & windows
* keep kids in & stay away from streets being swept
* always wear yr masks
